Const. Laura Nicolle said officers were called at noon to a residence on Athabasca Drive, south of Dufferin Street and Kirby Road.

“The initial information we have is that a single vehicle went off the roadway and struck several people,” Nicolle said.

“When our officers got to the scene, they located an adult male who was suffering from minor injuries and two young children who were suffering from very serious injuries. The children I’m told were rushed very quickly to hospital in potentially life-threatening condition.”

Nicole said the two children are brother and sister and have “quite significant” injuries and are in critical condition. The boy is four years old and the girl is 11.

They were out riding their bikes and a neighbour came over to assist with a bike chain when the incident happened, Nicolle said.

“They were out in the driveway on their own property when the vehicle it sounds like lost control, went off the roadway and collided with all of them,” she said.

The driver of a black Mercedes, a 17-year-old boy, was arrested at the scene.

Nicolle said the initial arrest was for dangerous driving and added that there is nothing currently to suggest impairment was a factor.

She said the speed limit on the road is 40 km/h and investigators will be looking at speed as a possible factor.

Witnesses are being asked to contact police.
