Man charged in fatal TTC bus crash released on bail

TORONTO – A 40-year-old man charged in connection with Tuesday’s fatal collision between a truck and a stopped TTC bus was released on bail Friday afternoon.

Vincente Bacobe Arbis was arrested and faces seven charges in connection with the collision including criminal negligence causing death, two counts of criminal negligence causing bodily harm and dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death.

Arbis appeared in court Friday and was released on $50,000 bail.

The incident happened Tuesday morning around 11:30 a.m. at the intersection of Steeles Avenue and Middlefield Road. According to witnesses, a cube truck lost control near the intersection and swerved into a stopped TTC bus and a nearby hydro pole.

Manoranjana Kanagasabapathy, 52, was stepping onto the bus when it was hit. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Another woman was struck after she had got off the bus.

Eleven other people were injured during the collision, including the driver of the TTC bus who was temporarily trapped and had to be removed by first responders. According to TTC CEO Andy Byford, the unidentified driver is “traumatized.

Arbis worked for Wilby Commercial Ltd a grocery wholesaler in Markham. He was transported to hospital following the collision with minor injuries.
