FARNHAM GLACIER, B.C. – A protest against the development of the Jumbo Glacier Resort in southeastern B.C., is heating up, as demonstrators on the road to one of the resort’s glaciers refuse to allow machinery to pass.
The so-called Citizens for Jumbo Wild have been camping out on the road to Farnham Glacier since mid-July, monitoring traffic and speaking to people who pass through.
But the group says it turned back a compact excavator bound for the glacier on the weekend.
Spokesperson K. Linda Kivi says members fear damage or alteration of the glacier, which they say would go against conditions laid out in an agreement approved by the province last year.
Jumbo Glacier Resort was proposed in 1991, and has been a hotly contested issue in the Kootenay region for two decades.
Once completed, it would become North America’s only year-round, glacier-based ski resort. (The Nelson Daily, CHBZ)
