McIver takes up Race City fight

City Hall – Ald. Ric Mciver will try one more time to get the lease on municipal land used by race City motorsport Park extended until 2015.

“Calgary is better off with race City than without it,” mciver said.

He will ask his council colleagues to back a notice of motion he’ll bring to monday’s meeting requesting that the lease be renewed for another five years to start and that access to race City be protected when the nearby shepard landfill is redesigned.

The city has leased 64 hectares in the southeast to the speedway since 1985, but that agreement expires next year. the city says it needs the land for storm water retention.

The owner of the speedway, which hosts everything from kart to motorcycle races, maintains he’s done the work to have the lease extended to 2015.

“(The city) wants to use the land for storm water for the landfill. there’s other land to do it on,” mciver said. “it may end up costing more money, but compare race City to what we spend on recreation facilities, tourist attractions. . . it’s a fairly small investment.”

A previous attempt by mciver in January to extend the lease until 2015 failed.
