Vancouver Police said the suspect has been charged with one count of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

He remained in custody and will attend a bail hearing Monday afternoon.

“The Vancouver Police Department’s Homicide Unit is now leading the case and will continue gathering evidence to support the ongoing investigation,” Sgt. Steve Addison said in a statement.

Police did not release information about a possible motive, or if any other charges will be laid.

Addison said Monday they have heard from residents who live near the park who voiced many concerns about safety. Addison said they want to assure residents that they believe this was an isolated incident and does not present a wider safety issue.

He said two people’s lives and their families are forever changed by this incident. “We have to remember these are kids,” Addison added.
