Two officers have been injured after Toronto police were called to a west-end bank Friday evening with reports of a robbery.
Emergency crews were called to the bank on Lake Shore Boulevard West, near Mimico Avenue, at around 7:15 p.m.
Insp. Andy Singh told reporters two plainclothes officers dealing with another investigation into other robberies in the area arrived within moments of being notified of the robbery.
He said two suspects were confronted inside the bank and one of them left the building, leading to a brief foot pursuit.
Singh said one of the officers was stabbed while the other one was cut during the arrest.
A Toronto Paramedics spokesperson told Global News two patients were taken to hospitals from the scene. The spokesperson said a man had serious injuries and another person had minor injuries. Paramedics and officers could be seen rushing from the scene toward downtown Toronto after the incident.
It was later reported the officer with serious injuries was stabilized.
A police spokesperson said Saturday morning that both officers were expected to be released from hospital later in the day.
Paramedics who responded to the scene left heading eastbound on Lake Shore Boulevard West with a police escort.
Singh didn’t elaborate on the investigation into, or the circumstances of, the other robberies.
Both suspects were taken into custody after the incident. Singh said an update on the investigation as well as charges is expected to be released over the weekend.
Officers closed off the immediate area around the bank for the investigation.
