Tragedy in New Brunswick causes B.C. snake owners to re-think pet choices

A B.C. man who rescues abandoned reptiles says that in the last few days he’s received a flood of calls from snake owners who no longer want their pets.

Reptile rescue centres are reporting a big spike in business in the days after two young boys were killed by a pet python in New Brunswick.

In Metro Vancouver, one expert says he’s been called twice to collect unwanted snakes from owners, including a two-meter long carpet python.

And in North Vancouver, conservation officers were called to the Purcell Way area, searching for a snake that had gone missing from a basement suite.

Officials are telling the public not to worry since that snake is little more than a meter long and not considered dangerous.
