A protest outside a downtown Toronto building where former U.S. presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush spoke Friday was described by onlookers as more festive than angry.
The Metro Convention Centre on Front Street, where the two former American leaders discussed global and domestic challenges facing the United States and Canada Friday afternoon, was under tight security.
Police officers, some on them on horseback, were lined up across the fenced-off street from the convention centre.
Helicopters buzzed overhead as Bay Street types walked in to the convention centre. About 150 protesters were assembled, with signs
condemning Bush and saying "war criminals not welcome here."
Protesters also set up a table with free vegan food with clever names such as "Leek on parliamentary lawn soup" and "Condoleezza rice."
About 50 people gathered in front of a large canvas bearing a picture of Bush, throwing their shoes at it, and chanting "war criminal."
