St. Paul’s Hospital performs 2,000th kidney transplant

It’s been 27 years since St. Paul’s Hospital started performing kidney transplants.

Today – the hospital announced that it had reached the 2,000th transplant milestone.

The recipient – a Williams Lake resident –  whose mother was one of the hospitals first kidney recipients.

Back then – the only organs available were from deceased donors. But today the options have increased.

There are living donors. Some are friends and family – others are strangers. And then there is the Pair Matching Program.

The result – a growing number of transplants are being performed in BC.

Even so – with over 400 waiting for kidney’s alone – there is a need for more to join the BC Transplant Societies Organ Donor Registry.
