Toronto police say a man has died and a woman seriously injured has been taken into custody after an altercation in the city’s east end late Monday.
Emergency crews were called to Rouge Highlands Drive near Port Union Road and Fanfare Avenue, south of Highway 401, just before 11:50 p.m. by a resident who reported a woman was injured.
Police sources told Global News the woman alleged she was beaten up and fought back with a knife. A man was found nearby in the basement apartment of a bungalow with critical injuries and no vital signs. He was later pronounced dead at the scene.
The injured woman, who is believed to be an ex-girlfriend of the man, was taken to a Toronto hospital and was later arrested.
Alyshah, who didn’t want her last name used, said she rents the apartment where the man was found. She said the father of her two-year-old daughter was staying there since Sunday while she was away. Alyshah said she now fears he’s dead.
“He called me and asked me for my street address and I asked him, ‘Like, make sure nobody’s going in my house, right,’ and he said, ‘No, that’s why I want the street address so I can meet them,” she told Global News, adding she last spoke with him Monday night.
Alyshah said he told her the woman had his knives. She added the man had a history of assaulting other women.
As of Tuesday evening, investigators didn’t release an update on the case and it wasn’t clear what, if any, charges the injured woman might face.
Meanwhile, anyone with information was asked to call the Toronto Police Homicide Squad at 416-808-7400 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-8477.
