Winnipeggers are getting their first glimpse of Assiniboine Park Zoo’s latest zoo babies. The zoo released photos Friday of two male snow leopard cubs that were born June 29th.
“Both cubs are doing exceptionally well and growing more and more each day”, said Gary Lunsford, Acting Director of Zoological Operations at the Assiniboine Park Zoo. “We expect that within the next few weeks they’ll start exploring on their own, at which point we’ll be able to announce a date for their public debut.”
Zoo officials say the cubs will remain out of sight until they are able explore on their own, which could take another 3-4 weeks. August 10th is being eyed as a potential date for the cubs to be on public display.
The zoo says its adult snow leopards are first-time parents. Batu (female) came to Winnipeg in June 2011 from the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle and is just over four years old, while Henry James (male) is three-years old and came to the Assiniboine Park Zoo from the Tulsa Zoo in September of the same year.
