Cyclists to have their say on Point Grey Road bike lane

A City Councillor is urging Toronto's transportation department to do a better job of clearing snow and ice from bike lanes. Global News

It could take days for all the speakers to be heard by Vancouver City Council concerning the Point Grey Road bike lane.

Hundreds of cyclists are expected to show up at City Hall today to discuss an issue that has really divided a community.

The issue on the table is whether to turn Point Grey Road, west of MacDonald, into a street for local traffic and cyclists only.

Supporters say the road will be much safer for cyclists. But opposition is strong as commuters are concerned other streets will become too congested due to the diverted traffic.

Vancouver City Council say most people support the project.

“We know from our 2014 plan out mandate is to increase walking, cycling, and transit use in the city,” said the city’s director of transportation, Jerry Dobrovolny. “That’s how we’re able to grow the economy, increase our population and jobs in the city.”

“Also from our plan we have a zero traffic fatality goal,  and so safety is very important.”

Other plans for the corridor include wider sidewalks, and a realignment of the intersection at Burrard and Cornwall.
