Feds shoot down native Kapyong claim

A Manitoba Conservative MP says a group of native bands have no claim to land on the former Kapyong Barracks military base in Winnipeg.

Seven First Nations and the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs announced Friday a court action to delay the selling-off of the vacant army base. The Treaty One First Nations say Ottawa has already admitted it owes them land, and wants the valuable property as part of the deal.

But today Rod Bruinooge, Conservative MP for Winnipeg South, says First Nations have already waived rights to lands within Winnipeg city limits.

The Treaty One First Nations have applied to federal court to block the transfer of the 60 acres of prime real estate that have sat vacant since 2004. One chief warns if Ottawa fights them in court, the First Nations could tie up development of the land for years.
