Origami cranes for Japan

The paper crane is known as a symbol of hope in Japan, and one Summerland business is hoping you will buy one to help the victims of Japan’s devastating 8.9 earthquake.

Good Omens Coffee is folding paper cranes and selling them for $2 or by donation to raise money for Rotary International.

The coffee shop is aiming to raise $5,000 to help re-build schools and hospitals in Japan.

Owner Jamie Ohmenzetter visited Japan about five years ago and says the country is very close to her heart.

She says watching TV footage of the devastation compelled her to do something to help.

“The reason for doing origami cranes was when I was in Japan, there was a little boy that taught me how to do origami,” Ohmenzetter said. “The crane was the first thing he taught me to do and that was the one that stuck with me.”

As of Saturday, Ohmenzetter had collected approximately $700.

She says she will run the fundraiser until she meets or surpasses her goal.
