Police warned drivers to avoid the route around noon, and closed multiple bridge lanes.

Delta police say they believe the female passenger had a mental health crisis as the vehicle was headed over the bridge northbound.

She allegedly attacked and seriously hurt the driver with an edged weapon, say police.

Several other drivers stopped to intervene.

“The passenger then fled the vehicle and appears to have suffered a medical event herself,” said Delta police in a media release.

Police say an off-duty paramedic offered medical help to the injured driver.

“We recognize that this incident may have been quite traumatic for those who witnessed it,” said Delta police spokesperson Cris Leykauf, adding that victims’ services were available to anyone who needs them.

Police had fully reopened the bridge by 1:30 p.m.
