Person dies in workplace accident in Burnaby, B.C., WorkSafeBC confirms

One person has died in an industrial accident in Burnaby Tuesday.

WorkSafeBC confirms they were called just after 10:30 a.m. to a construction site at 14 Avenue and 18 Street.

Few details are being released at this time but the B.C. Coroner’s Service has been notified.

WorkSafeBC’s Occupational Health and Safety Team are also responding.

It is unclear what happened or how the worker died. He was part of a crew that was excavating near a construction site to run pipes under a road.

In a statement to Global News, Marco Paolella, president of Marcon construction said they are saddened by what happened and their primary concern is for the worker’s family.

“We have offered our support to our trade partner for whom he worked. We will also be offering support to anyone who witnessed the accident,” Paolella said.

“We, along with our trade partner, are providing WorkSafeBC inspectors with any information they need to conduct a full investigation. We voluntarily shut down all work [Tuesday].”

He also said the trade partner is conducting its own investigation into what happened.

“We offer our sincerest condolences to the worker’s family.”
