Saturday afternoon was a tense one for members of the Winnipeg Police Service, before officers confirmed to Global News that a suspicious package found in Montrose Park turned out to be safe.
The package was a geocache container, the Winnipeg police duty office told Global News late Saturday afternoon.
Geocaching is a recreational activity akin to a scavenger hunt in which participants seek out hidden containers using GPS.
Multiple units were in the area behind Montrose School off of Grant Avenue, investigating suspicious object that appeared lodged in a tree.
The bomb team was also called to the scene to assist in the investigation.
A large portion of the area between Grant and Fleet avenues, as well as between Elm and Montrose streets, was blocked off while police examined the package.
On Monday police asked those taking part in geocaching to be mindful of how the containers appear.
“Please do not disguise packages to look like they are unsafe or would cause others to be fearful of discovering them,” police said in a release.
“Let’s keep this activity fun and safe for those participating.”
