New drinking and driving and excessive speeding laws in British Columbia are in effect, and they carry severe punishment.
As of Monday, if you blow over 0.08 during a breathalyzer test, or if you refuse to provide a breathalyzer test, your vehicle will be impounded for 30 days. You will also be given a 90-day driving suspension.
Police will also be enforcing a new warning range. If you are caught once with a blood alcohol level over 0.05 you will face an immediate three-day suspension. This is up from the previous one-day road side suspension.
Also starting Monday, drivers caught speeding 40 kph over the posted speed limit and higher will have their vehicle impounded for one week, and will face a fine of more than $2000.
