EDMONTON – Wednesday was another stormy night for the Capital Region and much of central Alberta.
A severe thunderstorm warning was issued for the City of Edmonton, St. Albert, and Sherwood Park. Environment Canada upgraded the watch to a warning at 7:22 p.m. MT Wednesday.
As of 9:55 p.m. Wednesday, a severe thunderstorm warning was in effect for City of Edmonton, St. Albert, and Sherwood Park, Westlock, Barrhead, Athabasca, Fort Saskatchewan, Vegreville, Redwater, Smoky Lake, Fort McMurray, Fort MacKay, Bonnyville, St. Paul, Cold Lake, Lac La Biche, Leduc, Camrose, Wetaskiwin, and Tofield.
A warning is issued when severe weather is either occurring or will occur.
A severe thunderstorm watch remained in place for Spruce Grove, Morinville, Mayerthorpe, Evansburg, Slave Lake, Drayton Valley, Devon, Rimbey, Pigeon Lake, Lloydminster, Wainwright, Vermilion and Provost.
Environment Canada is warning that severe thunderstorms are possible this afternoon and evening for the region.
It says severe thunderstorms could develop later Wednesday with large hail and damaging winds.
Environment Canada asks residents to monitor weather conditions, listen for updated statements, and take safety precautions if threatening weather approaches.
A severe thunderstorm watch is issued when “conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms with one or more of the following conditions:
– Wind gusts of 90 km/h or greater, which could cause structural wind damage;
– Hail of two centimeters (cm) or larger in diameter; or
– Heavy rainfall, as per rainfall criteria, excluding those for winter and during thaw.”
