Nancy Armstrong used to run home every time she needed to breast feed her first born baby. Not only did traditional covers not provide enough privacy while breast feeding in public, but it was hard on both her and her daughter.
“Once my daughter was a few weeks old, she started to really fight that,” Armstrong said. “She couldn’t see me and the fabric was flopping over the bust area where she was trying to latch. It was impeding her breathing and certainly obstructing our view of one another.”
That was when the Regina woman came up with idea for “The Booby Trapper”, a twist on the traditional nursing cover. Instead of using one rim, Armstrong made the simple design adjustment of using a larger canopy with two rims. Suddenly, mothers found themselves more undercover and mom and baby were able to look at each other.
“Because of that dual suspension system it’s one of a kind,” Armstrong explained. “It really does allow your baby to feel comforted and secure without feeling trapped by the fabric.”
It did not take long for other moms to notice Armstrong’s invention, making her realize there was a demand for something better. She had the support of her husband, who had a big role to play in the business’ success.
“My husband came up with the name, Booby Trapper,” Armstrong said. “Our initial tongue in cheek slogan was “˜Traps your boobs, not your baby’.”
The mother of two has found herself busy with her blooming business and now the Booby Trapper is found in 32 stores across Canada.
Not only that, but Armstrong’s creation found its way on the Red Carpet, being included in the list of gifts for last year’s Golden Globe attendees.
