RCMP Heritage Centre should be labelled national museum: Goodale

Saskatchewan’s only Liberal MP is pushing for Regina’s RCMP Heritage Centre to join the big leagues of Canada’s museums and be designated national museum status.

Ralph Goodale says such a move would guarantee the centre long-term funding from the federal government.

"There are a number of facilities across Canada that are designated as national museums," he said. "So it seems to me that the RCMP (centre) very much fits the criteria here."

The move comes just days after the federal government announced it is giving the Regina museum $2.1 million in funding over the next two years.

Centre president Robin Etherington says the latest funding will grant the board two to three years to come up with a feasible business plan. Getting national status was always part of this long-term plan, Etherington said.

"I appreciate Mr. Goodale’s support of that option, and again I will reiterate that it is one of the many options that the RCMP Heritage Centre through the business plan strategy will be reviewing and looking at," she said.

The need for additional funding comes after two years of declining attendance at the centre.
