Sask. to include more stop smoking drugs in provincial plan

Those looking to quit smoking as their New Year’s resolution will have more financial support from the provincial government.

Starting January 1, two smoking cessation prescription drugs, Champiz and Zyban will be covered under the government’s drug plan.

“Our government has made a strong commitment to help our residents make healthier life style decisions by reducing tobacco use,” Health Minister Don McMorris said.

Anyone trying to quit smoking is still encouraged to use the products along with additional smoking cessation counselling and supports.

According to the Lung Association of Saskatchewan, smoking is the leading preventable cause of death in Canada. Annually, 720 people in Saskatchewan die from lung disease.
