The Calgary Fire Department (CFD) believes a fire on Thursday that engulfed a two-storey home in the community of Dalhousie was possibly caused by spontaneous combustion.
According to the CFD, firefighters were called to a home in the 5900 block of Dalcastle Drive Northwest at 1:30 a.m.
When firefighters arrived, they found two people living in the home had been able to get out safely, along with their dog.
The fire department said the blaze appears to have started in the garage before spreading through the rest of the home, completely destroying it.
In a news release, the fire department said investigators have determined the blaze may have possibly started due to “the spontaneous combustion of some linseed oil-soaked rags that had been placed there after being used to stain a shed.”
Subsequently, investigators say the blaze is considered accidental in nature.
Firefighters say they were able to save a cat from the house, and Calgary police officers helped to evacuate residents from neighbouring homes.
No injuries were reported.
