Police are investigating a stabbing that sent a man to hospital and closed a major street in the Spence neighbourhood Thursday morning.

Winnipeg police said they were called to the 500 block of Ellice Avenue at 3:19 a.m. after two people found a man lying on the sidewalk suffering from stab wounds.

Responding officers provided immediate medical care, including applying a tourniquet, before the 36-year-old victim was rushed to hospital in unstable condition, police say.

The man’s condition was later upgraded to stable, police said later in the day Thursday.

By 7 a.m. Thursday, a two-block section of the curb lane of westbound Ellice Avenue between Young and Furby streets were closed, and police tape was up around Ellice Place, a large apartment block.

In a release later in the day Thursday police said no arrests had been made, but the major crimes unit is continuing to investigate.
