Hit-and-run victim identified as 72-year-old Burnaby man

Burnaby RCMP and family members of a man killed in a hit-and-run made a public appeal for the driver and witnesses to come forward Friday.

Seventy-two-year-old long-time Burnaby resident Ed Simpkin was riding his bicycle at around 8:30 p.m. last Sunday when he was hit by a black or blue two-door vehicle at 13th Avenue and Wright Street.

Police released video surveillance of what they believe may be an Acura RSX or Honda Civic in the hopes that someone will recognize it and come forward.

The man suffered massive head injuries and died instantly.

Witnesses say the young female driver of the car slowed down and took a look at the victim before driving away.

Police also believe another driver came across the scene just as it occurred, or seconds after, and then reversed and left.

Mounties  urgently wish to speak to that person about what he or she may have seen.

Family members made an emotional plea Friday morning to the driver asking her to turn herself in.

We thought Ed was indestructible. His family and friends are in shock and grieving and not knowing what happened makes it so much worse, said the victim’s sister Janet Atkinson-Grosjean,

We can understand the driver’s initial panic but it’s time for her to come forward, now, so we can say ‘goodbye’ to Ed with easier minds.

Police have conducted an intensive investigation since the incident, but say they still need more witnesses to come forward.
