Dermatologist says sunscreen up to SPF 100 “a bit of a game”

Summer is here, which means parents and those who spend time in the sun are shopping around for the best way to protect their skin from harmful rays.

There’s something new out – companies are now offering sunscreens with SPF 60 and 100. Now it’s up to consumers to decide if they need sunscreen that goes that high.

“I think this is a bit of a game, to be honest,” said Dr. Roberta McKay from the Canadian Dermatology Association.

Dr. McKay says there is no need to go any higher than SPF 30, which blocks out 97 per cent of UVB light. SFP 50 blocks out around 98 per cent.

“One you go beyond 50, the differences for blocking the light is miniscule,” Dr. McKay explains.
