A new chapter in Edmonton…

A jaw dropping performance that will no doubt be the talk of Edmonton for the next two weeks.

In what was, by far, the most embarassing display by an Eskimos Football team that I can ever remember – the Green and Gold were humiliated by the Calgary Stampeders 56-15.

How bad was it?

Henry Burris: 21/29, 305 yards, 3 TD’s

Nik Lewis: 5 catches, 117 yards, 2 TD’s

Edmonton Total Yards: 215

Calgary Total Yards: 501

Edmonton Turnovers: 6

Calgary Turnovers: 0

Edmonton Sacks Allowed: 4

The stats don’t lie… the Eskimos were out-played, out-worked, and out-classed by their bitter rivals.

Forget that Ricky Ray left the game early with an injury. Forget that they’re without Fred Stamps. The bottom line is that their defence was horrendous. To say that their defensive line was subpar would be a massive understatement. Their offence was flat. And worst of all – they played with ZERO heart.

So what happens next?

The Eskimos go into the bye week with a dismal 1-6 record – tied for last in the West Division with the BC Lions. Their playoff hopes are fading fast and with a tough schedule ahead (SK, CGY, CGY, MTL, TOR) it’s entirely possible that they could be 1-10 or 1-11 by the end of September… stunning.

Let’s call it like we see it – the Eskimos will miss the playoffs. Their season is done and now is the time to start looking ahead to the future.

When Kelly Campbell threw his temper tantrum at the end of the game – throwing his helmet in the direction of some sideline officials – it dawned on me that Richie Hall had lost complete control of this team. I know Campbell was frustrated and understandably so, but there was no excuse for his behaviour.

It’s time the Eskimos fire Richie Hall and the time to strike is right now. An interim-coach can have the entire bye week to work with the players and try and implement something new to at least salvage parts of the season.

I agree with Glen Suitor who says it’s time for Jared Zabransky to get in some solid game action as a starting QB for the Green and Gold.

Much like the Edmonton Oilers, it’s painfully obvious that this team will have to start from scratch before they can go back to being one of the toughest teams in the league.

What better time to start a new chapter than right now.
