Disaster relief centres set up for homeowners with uninsured damage

WATCH: Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney talks about the steps his office is taking to assist those in need of government services following the recent devastating floods.

CALGARY- Relief is on the way for Calgarians whose homes were affected by the floods and are not covered by insurance.

Two disaster recovery program registration centres have been set up so that residents can apply, and run from July 2-7. The program helps homeowners repair or rebuild their homes, to return their property to the condition it was in before the floods.

“This is to get them started with repairs and reconstruction,” explains Transportation Minister Ric McIver. “After they talk to somebody, they will get up to $10,000 dollars and they will get it within 7 to 14 days.”

He adds that the goal is to get money where it’s needed–fast.

“In past programs, people have had to wait months, sometimes years for money to flow from the government. In this case, it’s days.”

Bragg Creek residents can also apply for help in Calgary.

They are open until 8 p.m. on July 2, and from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. July 3-7.
