QUISPAMSIS — The Kings Way Care Centre in Quispamsis has a new sensory room for patients with dementia.
The room offers an environment that helps residents with dementia among other ailments relax and unwind with a calming and therapeutic effect using soothing visuals and sounds.
“It’s very common in people that have dementia. Sometimes they’re confused about where they are or they’re worried for some reason — anxiety is common,” says Tracy Scott the Director of Care at the facility.
The room includes lights that continually change colours, relaxing music, and calming scents. Nurse manager Krista Chaisson says already residents are enjoying the room.
Outside of the room there are a number of interactive displays on the walls, so if a resident can’t make it to the sensory room then a scaled down version of the room can come to them. The portable cart features a bubble machine and a projector casting the night sky right on their ceiling.

The sensory room helps take some burden off the nurses, who tend to have to resort to distraction and redirection tactics to calm residents down.
The whole project has been five years in the making and cost $30,000 to build with the help of community donations and the Greater Saint John Foundation.
