VANCOUVER – A provincial court judge has delayed sentencing for a former beauty queen who joined others in looting a Vancouver drug store during the Stanley Cup riot.
Sophie Laboissonniere is now expected to be sentenced on July 9.
At her sentencing hearing on Monday, the Crown introduced a ruling that may impact Laboissonniere’s plea for conditional discharge for her part in the June 2011 riot.
Matthew Lennox, a Vancouver rioter sentenced Friday, was given a conditional discharge because video showed his demeanour, which was described as calm.
The judge said Lennox did not appear to incite the riot, and his behaviour during the frenzy was called “an aberration.”
Lennox is one of the only two rioters granted conditional discharge so far.
On Monday, lawyers involved in Laboissonniere’s case requested the judge review that ruling before proceeding.
Laboissonniere pleaded guilty to taking part in the riot, and in exchange the charge of break and enter was dropped against her.
At a sentencing hearing last month, Crown counsel asked for a two-year conditional sentence, along with probation and community service for the former Miss Congeniality.
Over the last two years, 149 people have entered guilty pleas for participating in the riot and 102 have received sentences ranging from discharges to more than a year in jail.
Only one person, a 26-year-old man, has been convicted at trial after online video footage showed him using a street barricade to smash a storefront window during the rampage, but trials are currently scheduled for 15 other suspects. (CKNW, The Canadian Press)
