OPP are investigating a pair of serious crashes in different areas of rural Hamilton, including one near the airport that left one person dead.
The first crash happened in Greensville at the intersection of Highway 5 and Brock Road at about 11:40 a.m. on Monday.
OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said the collision involved a dump truck traveling westbound on Highway 5, just approaching Highway 6, when it “drifted off” the road and crashed into a hydro pole.
Hamilton Paramedic Superintendent David Thompson told Global News that a man of approximately 60 years of age was taken to hospital in critical condition.
Hours later, Schmidt said the man’s condition had been upgraded to stable, however, he was not conscious and unable to speak to investigators.
The second collision, which happened at around 2:15 p.m. on Highway 6 near Book Road, involved three vehicles including two transport trucks, according to Schmidt.
“An SUV was traveling southbound on Highway 6, and for some reason, crossed into the path of a northbound transport truck, apparently sideswiping it,” Schmidt said.
The SUV continued traveling southbound for some distance before drifting into the northbound lanes again where it collided with another transport truck.
A 54-year-old woman from Haldimand County, Colleen Hyslop of Cayuga, was pronounced dead at the scene in that crash, according to Schmidt.
The drivers of both transport trucks were uninjured in the collision.
One of the trucks was carrying dangerous goods, which delayed cleanup and recovery due to a spill, said Schmidt.
The highway between Book and Butter Road was closed for hours for an investigation. It re-opened just after 9:30 p.m. on Monday night.
