Two new agricultural research centres launched on Tuesday at the University of Alberta.
The Phytola centre and the Livestock Gentec centre are expected to create new opportunities for Alberta’s farmers and ranchers.
Research at Phytola will focus on creating oil products from canola and flax while research at Livestock Gentec is meant to produce healthier, more efficient cattle which will produce better beef and milk products, both of which are "key industries" in Alberta, officials say.
The technology that will be used for research at the two centres will also help ensure Alberta’s relevance in the livestock and crop industry, increasing values of products and decreasing cost of production of those products.
"We know that we live in a very competitive environment we see other jurisdictions that are increasing their exports, moving into markets that Canada used to believe was its own. We need to remain competitive and this kind of technology is certainly going to put us in that game," said Dr. Stan Blade, CEO of Alberta Innovates Bio Solutions.
Alberta Innovates is investing $2.25 million into each centre over two years.
