MONCTON — Moncton City Council has voted to acquire Highfield Square.
The vote came after an hour long discussion on whether or not purchasing the property on Main Street would mean the immediate demolition of the building on the property.

Councillor Brian Hicks added an amendment to the motion that if the City were to purchase the land, the old Highfield Square Shopping Mall building would not be demolished until it was confirmed a downtown events centre would be built on the property.
He said if a centre did not go ahead, the building may still be worth something. And if the building was to be demolished, the City is on the hook for all environmental clean-up costs, which are estimated at about $2.5 million, pending what they find beneath the building.
The purchasing and environmental clean-up is estimated about about $10 – $12 million.
