PORT BICKERTON, N.S. – A coastal community in eastern Nova Scotia has taken over responsibility for the local lighthouse.

The federal government has officially transferred ownership of the Port Bickerton lighthouse from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans to the Municipality of the District of St. Mary’s.

Ottawa has also provided $50,000 for repairs to the structure.

Port Bickerton and Area Planning Association, which for the past 16 years has run an interpretive centre at the lighthouse, will lease the facility.

The lighthouse is still in operation as a navigational aid and the Canadian Coast Guard will continue to maintain the light.
