Fighters flex muscles ahead of first Winnipeg UFC event

Winnipeg fans of the Ultimate Fighting Championship got preview of some of the action expected later this week, when fighters held an open workout Wednesday in a downtown shopping centre.

Fighters sparred at Portage Place Mall Wednesday in an open-to-the-public event set for 11 am to 2 pm.

The mixed martial arts fight tournament makes its first ever appearance Saturday night, with UFC 161 at MTS Centre. The UFC is stoking the hype among Winnipeg fans in the days leading up to UFC 161, with Wednesday’s open workout and other public events including the fighters’ weigh-in Friday at 4 pm at MTS Centre.

A media conference is set for 1 pm Thursday at the Met downtown.

On Saturday, fighters on the preliminary card slug it out starting at 6 pm; the main event is set for 9 pm.
