Stephen Harper, stand-up comedian?

OTTAWA – Who knew the prime minister did impressions?

A five-minute video posted on YouTube Tuesday night shows Stephen Harper at a podium doing his best former prime ministers: Joe Clark and Brian Mulroney.

“Joe,” someone says from the crowd.

“It is a real pleasure to be here tonight,” Harper says in a deep punctuated tone, to laughs.

The prime minister’s office confirmed the authenticity of the video, but did not say who posted it.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Looking relaxed and chuckling to himself, Harper does a two-minute bit at what appears to be a rehearsal on election night 2011, with a Here for Canada/Ici Pour Le Canada Conservative background.

“I do them all,” Harper says at one point.

Laureen Harper also makes an appearance, standing beside Harper in a grey hooded sweatshirt, as does his teenage son, Ben. “Read your speech dad, read your speech,” he says at one point, softly hitting Harper on the shoulder.

Also in the video, it appears, at the 2:15 mark: Conservative Senators Marjory LeBreton and Carolyn Stewart-Olsen.

The user, a “Steve Harper,” posted the video Tuesday night. The user only joined YouTube on Tuesday, according to his profile.

As of Wednesday morning the video had more than 1,500 views.

It comes as the prime minister, who is in Europe, continues to take heat from the opposition about a $90,000 cheque his former chief of staff gave to Sen. Mike Duffy. Harper denies knowing about it beforehand.
