Council endorses $2.9M water play area for Edmonton’s Hawrelak Park

EDMONTON – A spray park and wading-pool area is one step closer to reality for Hawrelak park. A council committee endorsed the plan Tuesday afternoon.

The $2.9 million proposal is slated to be built near the playground and would be the size of about 3 tennis courts. The proposal has been scaled back from original plans, which would have cost $5 million to execute. That vision would have included a sand-beach area, a wading pool, a boardwalk and a viewing deck.

The new concept already has funding set aside for construction.

“Our outdoor aquatic strategy master plan calls for two significant facilities like this,” said Ward 10 councillor Don Iveson. “So if this is the first and it’s really well used, then we can figure out where to out a second one elsewhere in the city to serve other populations.”

If approved by council next week, construction could start late next year.
