Videos posted on social media and shared with Global News appear to show the graphic moment the victim of a fatal hit-and-run in Brampton was struck.
Emergency crews were called to the front of a home on Sunny Meadow Boulevard, south of Torbram Road and Sandalwood Parkway East, just before 11 p.m. on Wednesday.
Officials said a man was taken to hospital by paramedics in critical condition, where he later died.
The man was later identified as 51-year-old Balvinder Bains of Brampton.
Mooken said a suspect was taken into custody Thursday morning.
Police later said the accused, 53-year-old Brampton resident Amarjit Lamba, was arrested for second-degree murder. He made a first appearance in a Brampton court as his wife and two children looked on.
Global News learned through court documents that the accused was charged in connection with a threatening death incident in 2003. In March 2004, Lamba entered into a peace bond — which means he agreed to keep the peace and in exchange the criminal charge was dropped.
In a video posted on social media and in another video provided to Global News, both of which are under a minute long, the victim appears to get out of a light-coloured van. The van can be seen slowly driving forward before briefly reversing.
The victim appears to take a few steps away before the driver appears to drive at the man, violently knocking him to the ground, and the front-right wheel fully runs over the victim.
The van then reverses and the driver can be seen slowly accelerating forward. It’s unclear what exactly happened in the moments before and after the videos.
