A fatal accident near Barney’s River, Nova Scotia could be responsible for a massive fish kill in the area.
The accident happened last month on highway 104 when a tanker truck carrying used motor oil and a pick up truck crashed. The tanker truck, which was carrying 38,000 litres of used motor oil, went into a ditch and caught fire.
The drivers of both vehicles died at the scene of the accident.
Crews worked to remove as much oil as possible.
However Sterling Belliveau, the province’s Environment Minister, confirmed Thursday that close to a million dollars worth of salmon has been lost.
“We’re dealing with about 500,000 salmon fry, and this has just been reported in the last few days…this is a very serious situation,” says Belliveau.
The investigation into the accident and the fish kill is ongoing.
