Ground was broken Tuesday for a $400-million research facility at the Toronto Hospital for Sick Children.
The 21-storey building will bring together about 2,000 researchers and staff, who now work in six nearby facilities, making SickKids hospital the leading research hospital in Canada.
"Our science and tech strategy is to train the scientists of the future – attract scientists from around the world – and to do that takes the best buildings," said Gary Goodyear, minister of state for science and technology.
Almost 60 per cent of the tower has already been financed. The SickKids Foundation will now begin a fundraising campaign to cover the rest of the costs.
"We believe that the community will rally around this fundraising campaign and want to see SickKids continue to be the pre-eminent child health care organization in the world," said SickKids Foundation president Ted Garrard.
Construction is scheduled to be completed by 2013.
