Police have arrested a 56-year old man in connection with the assault of an Edmonton pawn shop owner.
Kenneth Angus Campbell of St. Albert has been charged with one count of robbery, one count of aggravated assault and one count of possession of a weapon dangerous to the public in connection with the assault that happened on March 1st.
75-year old David Woolfson, the owner of A1 Trading on 95 Street and 111 Avenue, was beaten and left unconscious on the floor of his store. He was discovered after three customers came into the store and called 911.
Robbery detectives believe Woolfson was assaulted with a hatchet. He received serious injuries to his head and upper body.
Police were only able to gather certain information from Woolfson after he was released from hospital due to the severity of his injuries.
There were security cameras in the store when Woolfson was attacked, but police say they were not functioning. An undisclosed amount of cash and jewelry was taken in the incident.
“Just as this case touched a lot of citizens, it also had an impact on those who were involved in the investigation." Detective Rob Paton of the EPS Robbery Sections said in a news release. "Our Robbery Section detectives worked very hard on bringing this case to a conclusion. But credit also needs to go to patrol members who were first on scene as well as the St. Albert RCMP who provided assistance.”
Woolfson was featured in the 2009 documentary "Broke" which detailed the day to day operation of a pawn shop.
