Toronto police said emergency crews were called to a Toronto Community Housing apartment building on Lawrence Avenue East east of Mossbank Drive, near Scarborough Golf Club Road, at around 3:30 p.m. on Monday.

Insp. Mandeep Mann told Global News a mother was returning home with her three young children after picking two of them up from school when an air conditioning unit fell from an eighth floor apartment and hit the girl as she was in her stroller.

Toronto Paramedics then rushed the girl to the Hospital for Sick Children with a police escort.

“She is in grave, grave condition — very serious. It remains to be seen if she will survive,” Mann said Monday evening, praising the life-saving efforts of first responders and SickKids staff.

Mann said officers are conducting a forensic investigation. He said investigators are looking at surveillance video and are speaking with witnesses “to ensure we know exactly what happened,” adding preliminary information suggested this incident was a “tragic accident.”
