The proposal to develop a massage parlour in an area of Fort Road has been dropped.
The city of Edmonton has recently invested $75 million into revitalizing the Fort Road area. Business owners in the area where the new parlour was proposed circulated a petition trying to stop the parlour from opening. Residents feared that the massage parlour might offer sexual services and felt that this was inappropriate for the area.
The proponent of the parlour withdrew their development papers because of such high community opposition.
This is the second time in recent months that a massage parlour proposal has been withdrawn due to public pressure. Businesses along 124th street protested in November of 2009 to prevent a massage parlour from opening up in their neighbourhood. The proposal was later withdrawn.
