Man shot at townhouse in south Winnipeg neighbourhood; 40th homicide of the year nears record

Winnipeg police say a man was shot at a townhouse in Winnipeg’s South Pointe neighbourhood overnight.

Const. Rob Carver said police were called to the scene in the 100 block of Tim Sale Drive at 11:45 p.m. Monday. There, they found an adult male dead from gunshot wounds.

“No further information really is available at this early stage of the investigation,” he said, before asking the public to come forward with any additional information.

When asked if the investigation indicated gang ties or any connections to previous homicides, Carver said he could not comment.

This is the 40th homicide of 2019. The record is 41 homicides in 2011.

Carver said the fact the homicide is being investigated by the Major Crimes Unit is “specifically due to the fact that we are now at 40 homicides.

“We are now at 11 homicides in 30 days. This is unprecedented for us as a police service, as a city. We are pulling in all sorts of resources in all sorts of areas … everyone is feeling this.

“You can see it in the hallways.”

However, everyone is stepping up, said Carver.
