UPDATE: Police say a standoff at a rural cabin in B.C.’s Kootenay region is now over, adding that one man was arrested while one officer was shot during the incident.
The drama unfolded on the evening of Thursday, Oct. 10, when Kaslo RCMP attended a residence near Argenta, B.C., to execute arrest warrants on a known individual.
Police say the man bolted for a nearby cabin, leading to a lengthy standoff in which one officer sustained serious, but non-life-threatening injuries after being shot.
In a press release, RCMP Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey said the suspect barricaded himself in the cabin and allegedly fired shots. The injured officer was transported to hospital and is expected to recover.
The standoff lasted until Friday, with O’Donaghey saying “lengthy and exhaustive negotiations” took place, with the 28-year-old man eventually exiting cabin. He was arrested without further incident.
“While we always hope that situations such as this come to a swift and safe resolution, we are thankful that our officer is expected to fully recover and no one else has been injured,” said Southeast District RCMP Chief Superintendent Brad Haugli.
Police say the man is in custody and that no charges have been laid at this time

Police say a “dynamic situation” is still unfolding and that crisis negotiators are on scene, following an attempted arrest in B.C.’s Kootenay region on Thursday evening.
According to police, Kaslo RCMP attended a rural property near Argenta, B.C., at approximately 7 p.m., to execute arrest warrants on an individual known who is known to them.
Police say when the man was confronted, he fled to a nearby cabin.
Argenta is a rural community located near the northern end of Kootenay Lake, and is about a two-hour drive northeast of Trail.
“The RCMP Southeast District Emergency Response Team, along with crisis negotiators, have been deployed to the area and remain at the scene,” RCMP Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey said on Friday.
“Our efforts to negotiate a peaceful end and resolution continue at this time.”
Given the cabin’s remote location, police said no other properties or people have been evacuated.
Police are also asking the public to avoid the area at this time.
