Schmidt said the rider was taken to hospital by paramedics without vital signs. He said the patient was later pronounced dead.

Schmidt said no one else was injured.

He said officers shut down the westbound lanes at Appleby Line and noted the eastbound lanes in the area weren’t affected.

Officers closed the highway for several hours as collision reconstruction investigators gathered evidence.

Witnesses in the area who haven’t spoken with police were encouraged to call the OPP.
