UPDATE: Search temporarily halted for man who fell into Humber River

TORONTO – After hours of searching, rescuers are calling off the search for the man who fell into the flood-expanded waters of the Humber River in pursuit of his dog.

Toronto Fire chief Jim Slobodian told Global News that rescue efforts have to be called off as the sun sets and darkness sets in because rescuers would be at risk of succumbing to the rushing waters themselves.

Toronto emergency personnel plan to resume the search at first light tomorrow morning.

Police say the man fell in at at approximately 6 p.m. Wednesday near the entrance to the river on Lawrence Avenue West. But the river’s high waters and fast current made it tough for them to tell at first.

Severe weather overnight Tuesday led to high water levels across the city.

Police were able to rescue the dog near Lawrence Avenue and Black Creek Drive.

Rescue crews set up a “trap” near the bottom end of the river near Old Dundas Road to try and catch the man.

More to come.
