A fire that ripped through a Crescent Heights apartment building on Sunday night is believed to be a case of arson, according to the Calgary Police Service.
The Calgary Fire Department (CFD) said crews arrived at the three-floor structure in the 200 block of 4 Avenue N.E. at around 9:30 p.m. to find smoke and flames coming from the second floor.
Firefighters were able to douse the flames and extinguish the fire.
No one was in the unit when the fire started, according to the CFD, but one person was taken to hospital by paramedics for possible smoke inhalation.
The CFD said on Sunday evening that residents would not be able to return to any of the units in the apartment building that night.
It’s unknown how many of the units were damaged by the fire or smoke from the blaze.
Boys and Girls Club of Calgary operated building
According to the Boys and Girls Club of Calgary, 10 young people were living in the building at the time of the fire.
The organization, which owns and operates the building, said all of the tenants are staying in a hotel until they can return.
The club said restoration services are expected to be on site on Tuesday to assess the damage. It wasn’t known on Monday afternoon when the tenants may be able to return.
Calgary police said officers were executing a search warrant at the building and the hazmat team and K9 unit were expected to investigate on Monday evening. Calgary police and fire officials are handling the investigation together.
