Six people homeless after southwest Calgary fire

CALGARY- A number of southwest residents were forced from their homes early Tuesday morning, after a huge fire broke out in the community of Glamorgan.

The blaze was sparked around midnight, in a home in the 4700 block of 40 Ave. S.W.

When fire crews arrived, the house was completely engulfed in flames, and spreading to neighbouring homes. A second alarm was called for backup.

“I was driving by and I saw a ball of flames shooting maybe 40, 50 feet in the air, and fire trucks pouring in from all over,” says witness Sam Morasco. “I was out back from behind the house, and the fire marshal came up to me and asked me to evacuate all the homes across the alley.

“I went up to one home, knocked on the door and the guy was pretty grumpy, asking me what I wanted, and I said ‘you have to evacuate, the house is on fire.’ He said, ‘you’re kidding’ and he booted it out of there pretty quick.”

Nine homes in total were evacuated, and everyone made it out safely. Two homes suffered significant damage.

“I’m glad nobody got hurt. I’ve never seen anything quite like it,” Morasco adds.

Fire investigators are now working to determine what sparked the blaze. One neighbor said he suspects smoking may be to blame.

“I was just walking by and there were a few people outside, having a few drinks, having a few cigarettes,” said a man who identified himself as Travis. “This is the end result of that, I guess.”

Six residents from two damaged homes have not been allowed back inside, and had to find alternate accommodations for the night.
