Toronto police investigating after human remains found in garbage bin

Toronto police say they are investigating after human remains were found in a dumpster behind a residential building in North York Monday morning.

Police said officers were called to Oakburn Crescent and Harrison Garden Boulevard, near Yonge Street and Sheppard Avenue, around 8:42 a.m.

According to investigators, the building’s superintendent was the one who contacted police after discovering a limb in the garbage bin.

Garbage chutes in the building were taped off as investigators gathered evidence. Two dumpsters were towed by police from the scene late Monday afternoon.

The homicide squad was notified of the discovery and it was being investigated as a suspicious death investigation. However, police later said it is not a criminal investigation and homicide is no longer involved. Police also said there is no threat to public safety.
